About 2,000. That is how many new jobs Walmart's American-made pledge produced in its first year, by the AFL-CIO's count.

In 2013, Walmart committed to invest $250 billion in products made, grown or assembled in America.

The AFL-CIO called that far behind the pace needed. About 18 months in, roughly 80 percent of Walmart's suppliers were still based in China.

In 2015, a watchdog reported more than 100 misleading American-made labels on Walmart.com to the FTC. In 2021, Walmart announced a new pledge: $350 billion over the next decade.

A big pledge is easy to announce and hard to audit. If you make one, publish what you will measure, or others will measure it for you.
