Baidu's AI is growing fast. Its ad engine is shrinking faster.
Baidu chose to pivot to AI. Apollo Go rides grew 212% in Q3 2025, but generative AI was about 2% of revenue in Q1 2024, and revenue fell about 3.8% in 2024. Compare dollars, not growth rates.

On March 16, 2023, Baidu showed China's answer to ChatGPT. It played a video. Shares fell 6.4%.
Its real choice was bigger than one demo. Keep relying on a search-ad engine that is shrinking, or build AI businesses to replace it. Baidu chose AI.
The new businesses grow fast. Baidu's robotaxi arm, Apollo Go, gave 3.1 million driverless rides in the third quarter of 2025, up 212%.
But from a tiny base. In early 2024, Baidu's generative AI revenue was about $90 million, roughly 2% of the quarter. Full-year revenue fell about 3.8% in 2024, then about 3% in 2025.
Fast growth on a small base can still lose to slow decline on a big one. When you judge a pivot, compare the dollars, not the growth rates.
