Data as of
October 18, 2026
  1. From profit to five straight losses. TAL Education Group earned $0.7 billion in fiscal 2017–2019. Then it lost money every year from fiscal 2020 to 2024: $1.5 billion in all. Fiscal 2025 was its first profit in six years: $0.1 billion.
  2. It outgrew its own economy many times over. Revenue rose from $0.6 billion in fiscal 2016 to $3 billion in fiscal 2026: 4.9 times as much. China's economy, counted the same way in money terms, grew about 100%. Whatever drove it, the economy around it does not account for growth of that size.
  3. It wasn't the cycle. The losses began in fiscal 2020 (mostly calendar 2019), a year China economy grew 6.1%. When a company falls while its economy grows, look inside the company first.
  4. Still smaller than it was. Revenue reached $3 billion in fiscal 2026, 33% below its fiscal 2021 peak of $4.5 billion.
