The short answer

Pick by where the hard part sits. If it is the report itself (pulling metrics from many teams, mapping them to ESRS or ISSB, tagging in XBRL and getting it past the auditor), buy a disclosure management platform such as Workiva or Novisto. If it is the emissions number, especially Scope 3, buy a carbon accounting platform such as Watershed or Persefoni. If your activity data already lives in SAP or Microsoft Dynamics 365, test the suite module first, because it starts from data your finance team already controls.

Check your obligations before you size the purchase. In 2026 the EU narrowed the CSRD to companies with more than 1,000 employees and €450 million in net turnover. California's SB 253 asks US companies with more than $1 billion in revenue that do business in the state for Scope 1 and 2 emissions, with the first reports proposed for November 10, 2026.

Why esg reporting software matter

A filed number has to be traceable, consistent with the financial statements and ready for assurance.

The EU narrowed the CSRD's scope in February 2026. In July 2026 the European Commission adopted revised ESRS that cut mandatory datapoints by more than 60%. California's CARB has proposed limited assurance of Scope 1 and 2 emissions from 2027 and 5 required Scope 3 categories. As of April 22, 2026, 28 jurisdictions had adopted the ISSB standards on a voluntary or mandatory basis, according to S&P Global.

Greenly bought Normative in September 2026, and Novisto bought Minimum earlier in the year. A tool bought for one mandate can end up with a new owner, or a smaller mandate, before the first renewal.

Who buys it

Disclosure platforms are usually bought by large listed companies preparing CSRD, ISSB-based or other regulated reports. Carbon accounting platforms are bought by companies of all sizes that must answer customers, investors or regulators about emissions. Financial institutions buy them to calculate financed emissions.

Typical triggers: a new reporting obligation, an auditor asking for assurance, a customer requiring a Scope 3 footprint, or a spreadsheet process that broke at the last deadline.

Before you buy: what teams do without one

Without software, teams collect data in spreadsheets and email, calculate emissions with a consultant and assemble the report in a word processor. That works for one framework and a handful of sites.

Some teams start with tools they own. ERP and cloud vendors sell sustainability modules, and at least one carbon accounting vendor offers a free self-serve tier.

Buying pays when more than one framework applies, an auditor needs to trace every number to its source, and a Scope 3 inventory depends on supplier data. It also pays when the same metrics feed the annual report, CDP responses and customer questionnaires.

What good looks like

CapabilityWhat good looks likeWhy it matters
Framework mappingOne metric maps to ESRS, ISSB, CDP and California requirements at once, and updates when a standard changes.Rules changed several times in 2026. Remapping by hand each time is slow and error-prone.
Audit trail and data lineageEvery reported number links to its source data, calculation, owner and approval, with version history.CARB has proposed limited assurance of Scope 1 and 2 emissions from 2027.
Scope 3 calculationSpend-based and activity-based methods, named emission factor sources, and a path to replace estimates with supplier data.Scope 3 depends on supplier and spend data, and CARB has proposed 5 required Scope 3 categories from 2027.
Data collection from the businessConnectors to ERP, HR, utility and travel systems, plus tasks and reminders for data owners at each site. Each site and function owns part of the data the report needs.
Report drafting and digital taggingDrafts the report inside the tool and exports tagged XHTML or XBRL where the regulator requires it.A report drafted outside the tool has no link back to the source data.
Double materiality assessmentRecords impacts, risks and opportunities, the stakeholders consulted and the thresholds used.Under the CSRD the materiality assessment decides which disclosures you must make.
Financed emissionsCalculates portfolio emissions using the PCAF standard, with data quality scores per holding.Banks, insurers and asset managers report the emissions of what they finance, not only their own.

How esg reporting software are built, and who sells each kind

Vendors in this category can take a labeled Spotlight slot on this guide. How Spotlight works

Disclosure management platforms

Collect ESG metrics from across the business, map them to frameworks, and draft, tag and approve the report with an audit trail, such as Workiva or Novisto.

Fits: Large companies whose main problem is producing a regulated report that an auditor will review.

  • WorkivaReporting teams that want sustainability disclosures, XBRL tagging and an audit trail on the same platform as financial reports.
  • NovistoCompanies that want ESG data collection, disclosure and Scope 1 to 3 carbon accounting in one platform.
  • Position GreenNordic and European companies that want modular ESG reporting software combined with advisory services.

Carbon accounting platforms

Calculate Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions from activity and spend data using emission factor libraries, then track reduction plans and supplier data, such as Watershed or Persefoni.

Fits: Companies whose main problem is a defensible emissions number, especially Scope 3.

  • WatershedCompanies that want a traceable footprint built on a library of 2.3 million emission factors, plus supply chain tools.
  • PersefoniCompanies and financial institutions that need Scope 1 to 3 and PCAF financed emissions.
  • SweepCompanies that want carbon accounting and ESG data for CSRD and PCAF reporting in one place.
  • GreenlyCompanies that want carbon accounting, life-cycle assessment and CSRD support; Greenly bought Normative in 2026.

ERP and cloud suite modules

Sustainability modules sold by ERP and cloud vendors that calculate footprints from operational and financial data already in their systems, such as SAP or Microsoft.

Fits: Companies standardized on one ERP or cloud platform that want sustainability data next to financial data.

  • SAPSAP customers that want corporate and product carbon footprints calculated from operational ERP data.
  • Microsoft Sustainability ManagerMicrosoft Dynamics 365 customers that want ESG data, emissions calculations and a green ledger view next to finance.
  • IBM EnviziEnterprises that want ESG data management and GHG Protocol emissions calculations from an IBM suite.

How to choose

Report or footprint first

Disclosure platforms are built around the document and its approvals. Carbon platforms are built around the calculation. Most now offer both, but one side is usually deeper.

Assurance readiness

Ask your auditor which evidence it will test, then check the tool keeps that evidence: source files, calculation logic, approvals and change history.

Scope 3 method

Compare the emission factor sources, how spend-based estimates are replaced with supplier data, and how uncertainty is shown.

Frameworks covered

Check the specific frameworks you file under, such as revised ESRS, ISSB-based local standards, California SB 253 and CDP, and how fast each change reaches the product.

Data integration

Count the systems that hold your activity data. A suite module may read ERP data directly; an independent platform needs connectors or uploads.

Vendor stability

Several vendors changed hands in 2026. Ask about ownership, funding and what happens to your data and contract after an acquisition.

How pricing works

Most vendors sell annual subscriptions after a demo and do not publish prices. Price usually depends on modules, the number of legal entities or sites, users and the frameworks covered.

Published list prices are rare. Where they exist, they run from free self-serve carbon accounting tiers to monthly per-tenant fees for cloud suite modules (vendor pricing pages, October 2026).

Budget for more than the license. Implementation, data connectors, consultants for the materiality assessment and the assurance fee are usually priced separately. Ask for those costs in writing before comparing quotes.

ModelHow it worksWatch for
Platform subscription by moduleAnnual fee for the modules you use, such as disclosure, carbon, materiality or supplier engagement, often scaled by entities or users.Modules added mid-contract may not be co-termed or discounted at renewal.
Per tenant cloud licenseA fixed monthly fee per tenant for a suite module, with storage and AI credits included up to a limit.Storage, AI credits and the underlying ERP or data platform are licensed separately.
Freemium carbon toolA free self-serve tier for a basic footprint, with paid tiers for reviews, approvals, custom emission factors and support.Check which features you need for assurance before you build your process on the free tier.
Software plus advisoryThe vendor bundles consultants for the materiality assessment, calculations or report drafting with the license.Separate the software price from the services price so you can renew one without the other.

Implementation

  1. Confirm your obligationsList each framework and deadline that applies to you after the 2026 changes. Buy for what you must file, plus what customers and investors ask for.
  2. Map data owners and systemsName the owner and source system for every metric.
  3. Build the first inventoryLoad one full year of data, calculate the footprint and reconcile it to last year's numbers before you change methods.
  4. Agree evidence with the auditorWalk your assurance provider through the tool's audit trail before the reporting period closes, not after.
  5. Draft, tag and fileWrite the report from the tool's data, tag it where required, and lock the numbers once approved.

Confirm before you sign

  • List of every framework we must report against, and the vendor's mapping for each.
  • Written timeline for updating the product to the revised ESRS and to California SB 253 rules.
  • Audit trail that shows source, calculation, owner and approval for each number.
  • Emission factor sources named, with version and update frequency.
  • Method for replacing Scope 3 spend estimates with supplier data.
  • Connectors to our ERP, HR, utility and travel systems, and who builds them.
  • XBRL or XHTML export, if our regulator requires it.
  • Data export in a usable format if we leave.
  • Implementation and services costs quoted separately from the license.
  • Change-of-control terms: what happens to our contract and data if the vendor is acquired.

Questions to ask in a demo

  1. Take one Scope 3 category from our data and show the calculation from invoice to metric tons, including the emission factor and its source.
  2. Show how an auditor sees the trail behind one reported number. Who approved it and when?
  3. We report under revised ESRS and California SB 253. Show the same metric mapped to both.
  4. When a standard changes, how long until the change is in the product? Show the last example with dates.
  5. Which of our systems do you connect to out of the box, and which need a custom build?
  6. What share of your customers had their numbers assured using your platform, and at which assurance level?
  7. Who owns your company today, and what changed after your most recent acquisition or funding round?
  8. Quote year-one cost with license, implementation, connectors and services listed separately.

Frequently asked questions

What is ESG reporting software?

ESG reporting software collects sustainability data from across a company, calculates metrics such as greenhouse gas emissions, maps them to reporting frameworks and helps produce the report. Disclosure platforms focus on the report and its audit trail. Carbon accounting platforms focus on the emissions calculation. ERP and cloud vendors sell modules that work from data already in their systems.

What is the difference between ESG reporting software and carbon accounting software?

Carbon accounting software calculates Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions and tracks reduction plans. ESG reporting software covers the wider report: social and governance metrics, the materiality assessment, framework mapping, drafting, approvals and digital tagging. Novisto bought carbon accounting firm Minimum in 2026, and most carbon platforms now offer CSRD reporting.

How much does ESG reporting software cost?

Most vendors do not publish prices and sell annual subscriptions after a demo. Published list prices in October 2026 ran from free self-serve carbon tools to monthly per-tenant fees for cloud suite modules. Implementation, connectors, advisory and assurance fees are priced separately. Ask for each cost separately.

Do we still need ESG reporting software after the EU Omnibus?

The Omnibus I directive, signed off by the EU Council in February 2026, limits the CSRD to companies with more than 1,000 employees and €450 million in net turnover. The revised ESRS cut mandatory datapoints by more than 60%. Companies that fall out of scope may still face customer requests, California SB 253 or ISSB-based rules elsewhere.

Does ESG reporting software handle California SB 253?

SB 253 applies to US companies with more than $1 billion in annual revenue that do business in California. The first Scope 1 and 2 reports are proposed for November 10, 2026. From 2027 CARB has proposed limited assurance and 5 required Scope 3 categories, so test the Scope 3 and audit trail features now.

What are the alternatives to Workiva for ESG reporting?

Other disclosure management platforms include Novisto and Position Green. If your main problem is the emissions number rather than the report, consider carbon accounting platforms such as Watershed, Persefoni, Sweep or Greenly. If your data sits in SAP or Microsoft Dynamics 365, their sustainability modules start from data you already hold.
