The short answer

Pick by how many leaders you need to reach and how senior they are. If you want coaching for hundreds or thousands of managers, with a few sessions each, buy a coaching marketplace such as BetterUp, CoachHub or EZRA. If the program serves a few dozen senior leaders through a transition, a merger or a strategy change, buy a managed coaching program such as Torch or Sounding Board, where the vendor builds the cohort around your priorities.

If the budget cannot stretch to a human coach for every manager, add an AI coach such as Valence's Nadia, which works inside Microsoft Teams and the calendar. Evidence that AI matches a human coach is thin and short-term. For the top team, keep a named human coach whose credentials and experience you have checked yourself.

Why executive coaching platforms matter

Leadership transitions decide whether a strategy gets executed. A new chief executive, a merger, a restructuring or a shift to AI puts leaders in jobs they have not done before. Coaching gives each of them a confidential adviser for that change.

The supply is large and uneven. The International Coaching Federation counted 122,974 coach practitioners worldwide in its 2025 study, up 15% since 2023, and estimated industry revenue at $5.34 billion. Credentials vary widely. ICF's entry credential needs 60 hours of coach training and 100 hours of coaching; its top credential needs 200 hours of training and 2,500 hours of coaching.

Platforms promise to fix the sourcing problem by vetting coaches, matching them to leaders and reporting on progress. The risk is paying for seats nobody uses, or putting a senior leader with a coach who has never worked at that level.

Who buys it

Chief human resources officers, heads of talent and leadership development teams buy these platforms. Coaching for the top team is sometimes bought separately, with the chief executive or the board choosing the coach.

Typical triggers: a new leadership competency model, a merger or restructuring, a cohort of newly promoted managers, a succession plan that names successors who are not ready, or an AI rollout that changes how managers work.

Before you buy: what teams do without one

Without a platform, companies hire independent coaches one by one, often through referrals, or buy coaching as part of a leadership program from a business school or consultancy. HR keeps a spreadsheet of coaches and contracts.

That works for 5 to 10 senior leaders, where fit with one coach matters more than scale. It breaks down when the program grows past what one person can match, contract and track.

Buying a platform pays when you need consistent vetting across many coaches, matching in several languages and countries, and usage reports you can show the executive team. Some companies use both: independent coaches for the top team, a platform for everyone below.

What good looks like

CapabilityWhat good looks likeWhy it matters
Coach vettingPublished minimum credentials and experience, such as an ICF credential and years of coaching, plus a vetting process you can audit.Credentials range from 100 to 2,500 hours of coaching experience. Senior leaders need the upper end.
MatchingLeaders choose from a short list of coaches matched on experience, language and goals, and can switch without penalty. The working relationship between coach and leader drives outcomes.
Senior coach benchNamed coaches who have worked with chief executives or led large businesses themselves, available in your regions.A platform built for managers may not have the coaches your top team needs.
Program designCoaching tied to your goals, such as a merger, a strategy or a competency model, with group sessions and manager involvement.Coaching linked to a business priority is easier to justify at renewal.
AI coachingAn AI coach that works in tools leaders already use, with clear rules on what data it reads and stores.AI extends coaching to people who would never get a human coach, but it reads calendars and conversations.
Confidentiality and dataSession content stays between coach and leader. HR sees usage and themes, not individual notes.Leaders will not open up if they think HR reads the notes.
Outcome reportingBefore and after measures agreed in advance, such as 360 feedback, engagement scores or promotion rates, not only session counts.Usage alone does not show the program changed anything.

How executive coaching platforms are built, and who sells each kind

Vendors in this category can take a labeled Spotlight slot on this guide. How Spotlight works

Coaching marketplaces at scale

A large network of vetted coaches matched to employees through an app, with sessions, content and AI tools sold across all levels, such as BetterUp, CoachHub or EZRA.

Fits: Companies that want to give coaching to hundreds or thousands of managers with one contract.

  • BetterUpCompanies that want human coaches for leaders and AI coaching for the wider workforce on one platform.
  • CoachHubCompanies that want AI, hybrid, group or executive coaching from one provider, including programs for mergers and restructuring.
  • EZRAOrganizations that want unlimited 1:1 coaching with credentialed coaches, from an LHH brand within the Adecco Group.

Managed leadership coaching programs

A smaller bench of experienced coaches delivered as programs built around the client's priorities, with group coaching and mentoring, such as Torch or Sounding Board.

Fits: Companies coaching a defined cohort of leaders through a transition or a strategy change.

  • TorchCompanies that want ICF-credentialed coaches with 5 or more years of experience, tied to leadership programs.
  • Sounding BoardCompanies that want 1:1 coaching, group coaching and mentoring in one system; part of BTS since 2025.

AI-first and hybrid coaching

An AI coach available at any time inside work tools, sometimes combined with a small number of human sessions, such as Valence or Coachello.

Fits: Companies that want coaching for every manager at a cost a human coach cannot match.

  • ValenceCompanies that want an AI coach, Nadia, for every manager inside Microsoft Teams and the calendar.
  • CoachelloCompanies that want human and AI coaching combined in one hybrid program.

How to choose

Who is being coached

A program for the top 50 leaders and a program for 5,000 managers need different coaches, prices and reporting. Decide which you are buying.

Coach credentials and seniority

Ask for the minimum credential, hours of coaching and leadership experience, and the share of coaches who meet it in each region and language.

Human, AI or both

AI coaching costs less per person and is always available. Human coaching builds a relationship. Check how the vendor combines them.

Link to business priorities

Managed programs build coaching around a merger, a strategy or a competency model. Marketplaces let each leader set goals. Pick the one your sponsor will fund.

Data and confidentiality

Ask what HR sees, what the AI reads, where session data is stored and whether it trains models.

Contract unit

Vendors price by seat, by session, by program or with unlimited sessions. The unit decides whether unused seats are wasted.

How pricing works

None of the vendors here publishes a price list. They sell annual or program contracts after a demo. EZRA, for example, says its pricing depends on the program, the number of participants and the duration.

The pricing unit varies: a seat per leader per year, a set number of sessions, unlimited sessions for a period, or a fixed fee per cohort. AI coaching is usually sold per user at a lower cost than human sessions, or bundled with human coaching.

Before comparing quotes, fix the inputs: the number of leaders at each level, sessions per leader, program length, languages and the reporting you need. Ask what happens to unused seats and sessions.

ModelHow it worksWatch for
Seat per participantAn annual fee per leader that covers a set or unlimited number of sessions plus platform access.Seats that go unused are still paid for. Ask whether seats can be reassigned mid-year.
Session packsA prepaid number of coaching sessions drawn down across the organization.Expiry dates on unused sessions, and different rates for senior coaches.
Program feeA fixed fee for a cohort program with set duration, coaching hours, group sessions and reporting. What is included if a leader drops out or a new one joins midway.
AI coaching licenseA per-user fee for an AI coach, sometimes enterprise-wide, sometimes bundled with human sessions.Data access terms: what the AI reads from email, calendars and chat, and who can see it.

Implementation

  1. Define the cohort and the goalName who gets coaching and what should change, such as a successful merger integration or readiness for a bigger role. Agree on the measures with the sponsor.
  2. Check the coach benchAsk the vendor for 5 named coach profiles that match your senior leaders, in their languages and regions, before you sign.
  3. Launch with the leaders' managersBrief each participant's manager on the goals so coaching connects to the day job.
  4. Review usage at 90 daysCheck activation and session rates and reassign seats that have not been used.
  5. Measure outcomes before renewalCompare the agreed measures before and after, such as 360 feedback or promotion readiness, not only satisfaction scores.

  1. Show us 5 coaches you would match to our chief financial officer. What are their credentials and leadership experience?
  2. What share of your coaches hold an ICF PCC or MCC credential, by region?
  3. What does HR see in the dashboard, and what never leaves the coaching session?
  4. Show the AI coach preparing a leader for a difficult meeting. What data did it read to do that?
  5. How do you measure whether coaching changed behavior? Show results from a client program with the method explained.
  6. What happens to seats or sessions we do not use by the end of the contract?
  7. How would you design coaching for 40 leaders during a merger integration?

Frequently asked questions

What is an executive coaching platform?

An executive coaching platform matches leaders with vetted professional coaches and manages the program: scheduling, sessions, goals and reporting for HR. Larger platforms such as BetterUp and CoachHub cover all levels, from executives to frontline managers. Managed programs such as Torch and Sounding Board build coaching around a company's priorities. Many now add an AI coach for support between sessions.

How much does an executive coaching platform cost?

The vendors in this guide do not publish price lists. They price by seat, by session, by program or with unlimited sessions for a period, and quote after a demo. EZRA says its pricing depends on the program, the number of participants and the duration. Get quotes on the same cohort size, session count and program length from at least 3 vendors.

Is AI coaching as good as a human coach?

The evidence is early. A 2024 study in Frontiers in Psychology found participants built similar levels of working alliance with an AI coach and a human coach, but it covered a single session. Use AI coaching to reach people who would never get a human coach, and test it on your own leaders before replacing human coaching for senior roles.

What credentials should an executive coach have?

The International Coaching Federation's entry credential, ACC, needs 60 hours of coach training and 100 hours of coaching experience. Its top credential, MCC, needs 200 hours of training and 2,500 hours of coaching. In ICF's 2025 study, 73% of coaches said clients and organizations expect a credential. For senior leaders, also ask for leadership experience at a similar level.

What are the alternatives to BetterUp?

Other coaching marketplaces include CoachHub and EZRA, an LHH brand. For a smaller cohort of senior leaders, managed programs such as Torch and Sounding Board, now part of BTS, build coaching around your priorities. For AI coaching at scale, Valence offers Nadia inside Microsoft Teams, and Coachello combines AI and human coaching.
